Maria: Part I

I've been doing a lot of character concept art recently. I think out of all forms of illustration, its the one I enjoy the most. Characters still take me longer to finish than I would like, but I've been using my open schedule and non-stop writing as an excuse to sketch out the things I see in my head. Below, Maria.

Maria is an older character design, from about a year or two ago. She's part of a two-part series. I didn't get around to coloring her until now.

I have a long standing obsession with robots and AI, and Fritz Lang's Metropolis is one of my all time favorite films. I think that's what inspired the Maria design, although if had to go back and change anything, I would definitely redesign her outfit. I went through a phase a couple years back where I drew all my characters like eye candy. I'm not sure if it was because I wanted my characters to look like that, or I was normalized into thinking that that was the only acceptable way for them to appear.

Either way, it's something that's never sat right with me.
